A certain “beads” type of air freshener is becoming popular in Japan. Instead of liquid in small containers, crystal-like beads the size of pearls are now more common. I wanted to design my own container for this type of air freshener.
Below’s a pic of this type of air freshener at the local grocery store. To the right is an example of these beads up close, inside one of the containers designed to hold them.
I wanted to design my own container. Usually I hide air freshener cans behind knick knacks such as picture frames and flower vases. I thought that instead of hiding them, why not display the beads along with a favorite photograph? This way we get to look at a cherished memory while at the same time get the benefits of an air freshener.
Here’s my idea:
The above shows clear beads mixed with blue, pink and orange, each having a distinct fragrance.
Here’s what the container, made of acrylic, looks like from the back:
There is an opening at the top to put in the beads, while smaller ones are for releasing the fragrance.
Here’s a look at the presentation board.
I’ve made a detailed CAD drawing with dimensions in millimeters. The package design would be a rainbow-like glide and color bubble matching the colored beads.
I did the 2D CAD using Vectorworks 2011, and 3D modeling/rendering with Shade 12 Pro.
So, what do you think of this conceptual design? Please share your thoughts and opinions in the Comments section below.
What a great idea! I suppose it can be opened up to throw out the beads when they’ve run out of scent? People can put in potpourri too, if they prefer.
Thank you very much, slf!
There are two types of “beads” sold here: one’s when the beads dry up and lose their air freshening effect you pour a special liquid and the beads absorb this and start working again; the second type is when the beads dry up and you’d have to throw them out and replace them with new ones. I mostly had the former in mind when I designed this frame. But I think the hole on top (in the middle) is big enough to pour out the beads for the latter type.
Yes, the beads could be replaced with potpourri, sand, small sea shells, marbles, and other small accessories. I’m also thinking of M&M’s, they’d look great with a kids photo but would be such a waste! 🙂
