Jousen-ji: Flowers & Friends

Flowers and friends at Jousen-ji

Flowers and friends at Jousen-ji

Good evening (or morning/afternoon)! Tonight’s post is an album of small statues I found at a Buddhist temple called Jousen-ji (also Josen-ji) in Yamato City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The temple’s known to have a nice garden full of flowers. I went there to find the cutest little things!

See the rest of the pics here!

The frame I used above is courtesy of The Coffeeshop Blog.

I Would Love to Hear from You!

All so beautiful and soft. Good evening 🙂

  3. I've seen a documentary on the kappa. Are they good spirits? I watched that they take kids who play in the river… ??

  4. +Chuan Jeng Yap Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun looking for them among the foliage and taking their "portraits" 🙂

  5. Good evening, +Lisa Co! Thank you very much for the comment! It was sweltering hot that day but I wasn't able to wake up early enough to photograph in the morning light (the temple is more than an hour away by train). Hope to go there again in Autumn, hopefully wake up early enough this time! 🙂

  6. +Leong Yew Weng I think these legendary creatures go both ways. Their malevolent side is drowning or even eating children and other horrible acts; but they're also said to have a benevolent side (helping farmers, teaching medicine, etc). I asked my husband, who is Japanese, his impression of the kappa and he said "non-existent creatures that are said to be mischievous" 🙂

  7. Haha… I like how your husband is such a realist. Cool, thanks for the info. Japan is so spiritual, hope the new millennium doesn't rob her of this beauty.

  8. +Leong Yew Weng Jousen-ji is one of the temples that honor the good kind of kappa. I do hope places like these will last for a long time.

It does somehow make sense to me to tell hard-headed little children not to get deep into the river because the kappa will pull them in. Just dishing the "you could drown in the strong current" type of explanation will probably not make as much of an impact 🙂

As for my husband, please don't mind him. He's a Physics major and a long-time software developer. He probably thinks he could explain everything via mathematical calculations 🙂

  15. +Yuichi Kitamura
